Long-Term Disability for Students

Eligibility: Each full-time medical student of Georgetown University Medical Center, who is a matriculating student in good standing, and who is a candidate for a medical degree.

Eligibility Classes:
Class 1 – Each First-Year Medical Student
Class 2 – Each Second-Year Medical Student
Class 3 – Each Third-Year Medical Student
Class 4 – Each Fourth-Year Medical Student

Waiting Period : None

Long-Term Disability Income Benefits

 
Definition of Total Disability Total disability must be caused by sickness or injury and must commence while you are insured under the policy. You will be considered totally disabled if:

 

1. During the elimination period and the following 24 months, you are unable to perform all the material duties and substantial functions of, and fulfill the necessary requirements to maintain your status as, an Active Full-Time Medical Student.

2. After the elimination period and the following 24 months, you are unable to perform the duties of any occupation or are unable to earn more than the amount of your monthly benefit before reduction by any other income.

Monthly Benefit Class 1 – $1,000 per month, reduced by Other Income.
Class 2 – $1,000 per month, reduced by Other Income.
Class 3 – $1,300 per month, reduced by Other Income.
Class 4 – $1,500 per month, reduced by Other Income.
Elimination Period Employee must be disabled for a period of 180 days before benefits begin.
Maximum Benefit Duration The greater of the following durations or employee’s normal Social Security retirement age:

 

If disabled prior to age 61: to age 65
If disabled at age 62: 42 months
If disabled at age 63: 36 months
If disabled at age 64: 30 months
If disabled at age 65: 24 months
If disabled at age 66: 21 months
If disabled at age 67: 18 months
If disabled at age 68: 15 months
If disabled at age 69 or over: 12 months

Other Income Benefits are reduced by income received from Social Security, workers’ compensation, unemployment compensation, disability benefits under another group insurance plan, government retirement system through your employer or other retirement plan, the employer’s retirement plan, and any state cash sickness plan. In addition, benefits are reduced by any amount of salary continuance or sick leave pay that exceeds 100% of basic monthly earnings when combined with all other income, including LTD benefits.
Preexisting Conditions Benefits are excluded for a disability that begins within 12 months following the employee’s effective date if treatment was received for the disabling condition during the three-month period preceding the effective date. Prior service credit for coverage under the employer’s prior plan.
Mental Illness Benefits limited to two years per disability.
Substance Abuse Benefits paid on the same basis as any other illness.
